Mental Health setup for more Investment by the Federal Government

Mental health = Physical health. We have made huge strides in ensuring that we recognize the importance of mental health in the last few years. There is less stigma, more resources and people are being open about their mental health illnesses and struggles. This has led to better care and ackowledgment of its importance.

Now, there is even more to celebrate when we think of mental health care. The federal government has announced more resources to come: "President Biden and Vice President Harris announce historic final rule that will ensure mental health care coverage for 175 million Americans is on par with their physical health care coverage."

These new regulations are pushing health plans to improve access to mental health and substance use care. Health plans must now conduct thorough evaluations to ensure equal access to mental health and medical benefits, by assessing clinician networks, out-of-network payment rates, and prior authorization practices. This will help identify areas needing more mental health professionals or reducing barriers to access

Additionally, the rule closes loopholes for non-federal health plans, extending protections to 120,000 more consumers. The aim is to ensure fair access and payment, likely boosting the mental health workforce and improving patient care. With that even more people should be using services.

Eventually I see mental health and physical health going away as terms. It will just be health.

Great news!
