Improving heart health using Community Centers

The American Heart Association is opening up rural health hubs in libraries to improve healthcare.

A great initiative - using community spaces to improve health access in rural areas. This pilot is happening in West TX. But who knows, if it works, maybe it will grow.

The hubs will have the following:
✳ Soundproof rooms for private telehealth appointments.
✳ Bluetooth-capable self-monitoring blood pressure devices and hashtag#weight scales.
✳ Blood pressure monitoring cuffs available for checkout, similar to borrowing library books.
CPR training kits and tabletop blood pressure monitoring available for all library patrons.
Libraries really are the best.

Using community resources for healthcare is not new. During the pandemic, some patients did not have access to devices or wifi so couldn't access telehealth. Community centers would host place where patients could connect. Patient could then come to the center to see a doctor online. Of course the goal is to get everyone wifi access and health access. Using our communities is still a wonderful way to bridge the gap until we get there.

More evidence that medicine still relies on community and human connection. Despite all the societal changes, this one hasn’t gone away.
